LOVE ROBESON: AN EVENING CELEBRATING PAUL ROBESON

Paul Robeson was one of the commanding figures of the twentieth century: a celebrated actor, an internationally renowned bass-baritone and a political activist whose convictions made him both admired and controversial.

He also had a particular connection with Eastbourne. Between 1929 and 1939, Robeson performed in the town on at least nine occasions. In 1938, around 2,000 people packed the Winter Garden Floral Hall to hear him sing, with others reportedly unable to get in.

For Black History Month, Love Robeson looks back at the man behind that remarkable career through music, film and conversation. There will be songs and recordings drawn from Robeson’s musical legacy, short films exploring his life, acting and activism, and an opportunity to discuss what his work and principles mean nearly half a century after his death.

Robeson used his fame for causes he believed mattered: racial equality, workers’ rights, peace and social justice. Those commitments eventually brought him into direct conflict with the American political establishment, but they were never an incidental part of his public life. Love Robeson considers the singer, actor and activist together rather than separating one from another.

The evening also comes at a significant moment for his Eastbourne story. Four days later, on Sunday 25 October, a commemorative plaque to Paul Robeson will be unveiled at the Winter Garden, marking his association with the town and the performances he gave here.
